POSSIBLE SCOTTISH ORIGINS AND IRISH DESCENDANTS

Much research and Frazer history and tradition has been gathered by Douglas Vaugh and presented on his web page. His traditions seem to coincide with the Frazer ancestors of the Hartleys based on spelling of the name and the part of Ireland in which they lived. Much of his information has been substantiated with other research of late, including that of Ros Faichney, Jane Fraser, myself and others.

According to the Vaugh web page , "In all records available in Ireland about settlements and properties, all Frasers, Frizells and Frazers mentioned came, and appear to have come from Ayrshire." Research done by a relative of Doug (not verified by this writer to date) traces the Frazers back to Simon Frazer in Scotland (1160-1190). Others in the line were in Stirling, Inverness down to Knock Castle. One of the Lairds, John of Knock married Margaret Stewart, daughter of Sir John Stewart. From Knock in Ayrshire the Frazers moved to Ireland following disputes over religion and loyalty to the Stewart crown. This research appears to be the source of information used to issue another Frazer descendant a grant of arms in 1952. (See the Vaugh page above.)

According to Elaine Frazer of Ballindoon, the family tradition is that there were four Frazer brothers who came to the Rockingham Estate in Boyle to work. 3 of the brothers emigrated to the United States and Canada.

Lough Key

The map to the right has many of the areas associated with Frazers of the 1700's and 1800's. The Frazers that I am researching were in Derrycashel, Clerragh, and Aghrafinigan. These Townlands are in the Ardcarn Parish. However, they border on the Kilbryan Parish. Also Annagh is mentioned in some of the records, but the connection is not clear. This is presumably the Annagh in the Kilronan Parish. At the time of Griffith's Valuation, many Frazers in this area leased land from Viscount (or Lord) Lorton. These records are located in Ireland's National Library in Dublin.

Lough Key is in the Northern part of County Roscommon. Aghrafinigan is to the North of the Lough. Boyle is to the Southwest. Rockingham Estates is directly to the South and Ardcarne is to the Southwest of Lough Key. Areas of interest to my Frazer ancestors are highlighted on the map to the right.

Generation One

1. Robert1 Frazer was born in 1612. He married (--?--) Crawford.

Children of Robert1 Frazer and (--?--) Crawford were as follows:

Generation Two

2. Lieut Colonel Edward2 Frazer (Robert1).

Children of Lieut Colonel Edward2 Frazer and an unknown spouse were:

3. James2 Frazer (Robert1) married Mary Ramsay.

Children of James2 Frazer and Mary Ramsay were:

He was the 9th Laird of Knock, also known as the Rebel Laird or James the Younger. An ardent Royalist and Episcopalian, James refused to go to the Irvine Church for the second signing of the Covenant and quarreled with the ministers. He refused to relinquish his loyalty to the Stewart cause and was persecuted by the Presbyterian Kirk in Ayyshire. Impoverished and hunted some 3 years, he fled into Ireland in the spring of 1650. Probably he and his three younger brothers are buried in Kilronan.

Alexander was the last and 10th Laird of Knock. He was the eldest son of James the Rebel and had four daughters. This ended the direct line of Knock in 1696.

Generation Three

4. Archibald3 Frazer (Edward2, Robert1) was born circa 1690 at Drumdoe.

Drumdoe is on the southeastern Shore of Lough Arrow. It is the only Townland in Roscommon bordering the Lough. He was either the son or grandson of the above Edward. He owned Aughnafinegan and Cleragh.

Children of Archibald3 Frazer and an unknown spouse were as follows:

See below the Elphin Census of 1749 as transcribed on the LEITRIM-ROSCOMMON Elphin Census Search Page. These are the following listing of Frazers in County Roscommon in the Parish of Ardcarn. It is possible that these are the Archibald and James mentioned above. Mary Frazer may have been the mother of Archibald and James.

All of the above are in the Townland of Ahrefinican (alternate Townland Spelling: Aghrafinigan).

Generation Four

5. Archibald4 Frazer (Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) married Mary Lilly, daughter of Colonel (--?--) Lilly.

Children of Archibald4 Frazer and Mary Lilly were as follows:

Mary Lilly (or Lillie) was the granddaughter of Colonel Browne of Ballintober. He was murdered by rebels on his way to join Lord Kingston's forces.

Generation Five

6. John5 Frazer (Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born in 1757.

Children of John5 Frazer and an unknown spouse were as follows:

7. Philip5 Frazer (Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born in 1758.

Children of Philip5 Frazer and an unknown spouse were as follows:

Let's pick up where the records left off during the Elphin Census of 1749. According to the 1834 Tithe Applotment, there were quite a few Frazers farming in the area. Now they are listed as being in Derrycastle and Cleragh - which means either that they moved a little bit or the Townland names became more specific at this time. Now this is 85 years later so a few generations have gone by.

The total tithed population of Derrycastle consisted of:

Name Total # of Acres L S D
John Frazer 12 ¼ 0 7
Archy Frazer 10 ¾ 0 6
Wm + Anne Frazer 13 0 7 11
George Frazer 8 ¾ 0 5
Philip Frazer 9 ½ 0 5 9
James Frazer 5 0 5 1
Archy Frazer of Shan 8 ½ 0 5 0
Widow McGrath 7 0 4 1
John Johnston 8 0 4 10

These names could be accounted for above. John could be the one born in 1757 or more possibly, John, son of Archibald. Archibald could be another son of Archibald, or son of John. George and Philip could be sons of Philip (b. 1758). Philip would be the likely father of the James I am interested in - especially if he named his first son after his father. I am assuming that Philip (b. 1757) was out of the picture by this time. The James listed below Philip could be the James I am interested in. Note that James' first son was Philip and he would have had at least 3 children by this time and would have probably had his own property. Lastly John Johnston was probably Jane Frazer's husband below.

In Cleragh, one Frazer was listed, but he was by far the largest land holder. He was listed under Mr. Mick Frazer & Co.

8. Richard5 Frazer (Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born in 1759. He was buried on 11 Mar 1824 at Ardcarne, Roscommon, Ireland.

Children of Richard5 Frazer and an unknown spouse were as follows:

9. Archibald5 Frazer (Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born in 1760. He married Ann Stinson.

Children of Archibald5 Frazer and Ann Stinson were as follows:

Frazer Lands in Roscommon

  Link to larger map
Frazer Lands in Shanvoley, Derrycashel and Cleragh at Griffith's Valuation

As may be expected, there were many changes in the 24 years between the Tithe Applotment and Griffith's Valuation. The famine changed the life of most families. In 1834, 12 Frazers are associated with Derrycashel. In 1858, there are 2 named Frazers there.

The image to the right shows the proximity in which the Frazers lived at the time of Griffith's Valuation (1858). To the left or West is Shanvoley (referred to as Shanwilly in some of the documents), where Alexander and his son Archibald lived. In the middle of the image is Derrycashel. Archibald Johnston lived at Lot 10B in 1858. He was likely a son of John Johnston and Jane Frazer. My third great grandfather James Frazer lived at lot 12a, the Southernmost part of Derrycashel and leased bordering Lot 10 in Cleragh. The lands to the North of Archibald Johnston and James Frazer (Lot 6) were occupied by Archibald Frazer. This Archibald may have been #10 below. From him, the house appears to be transferred to Richard Frazer. This was probably Richard Paton Frazer who had children born during this period in Derrycashel.

In bordering Cleragh was the house of Archibald Junior (Lot 9). This was the Archibald that married Catherine Parker.

10. Archibald6 Frazer (John5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1).

Children of Archibald6 Frazer and an unknown spouse were as follows:

11. James6 Frazer (Philip5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born circa 1804. He married Violet Frazer, daughter of Richard Frazer, on 23 Jan 1828; by license. He died on 3 Jun 1885 at Derrycashil, Roscommon, Ireland. He was buried on 5 Jun 1885 at Ardcarne Cemetery, Ardcarne, Roscommon, Ireland.

Gravestone for Margaret, Isabella and George William Frazer at Ardcarn

He was a Farmer. He lived in 1834 and 1858 at Derrycashel, Roscommon, Ireland.

Children of James6 Frazer and Violet Frazer were as follows:

James was born around 1804 based on his death records. James apparently lived in Northern Roscommon County. According to Griffith's Valuation of 1858, James Frazer held a "House, office, and land" in Derrycashel. James also leased from Viscount Lorton about 7 acres of land in Cleragh. According to family tradition, Archibald and Isabella did not marry, so the family house went to George's son George. George was able to afford the rent on the house in Ballindoon .The previous occupants could not and had been evicted. James Frazer was at his son George's wedding in 1866 along with a Thomas Acheson. Ardcarne Church records state that James and Violet died at Aughnaffinnegan. This place is about 1 kilometer South of Cleragh. James died a widower on 3 June 1885 in Derrycashil according to the civil records. The informant was A. Frazer, son. According to the church of Ardcarne records, he died at Aughnafinnegan at age 81 and was buried June 5th 1885. It is likely that they actually died at Derrycashel and the Church recorded it as Agrafinigan (current map spelling).

The Ardcarn burial records show a William Frazer that died in "Augnafin." in 1847. This is the place where James and Violet died. William died at the age of 55 and would have been born in 1775. This means that he would have been the right age to be the uncle of James and the oldest Frazer living in the area recorded at the Ardcarne Church.

12. Philip6 Frazer (Philip5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) married Jane Johnston on 22 Nov 1818 at Kilmactranny Parish; Witnesses Edw. Johnston and Edw. Johnston. He married Mary (--?--) circa 1824.

Children of Philip6 Frazer and Jane Johnston were:

Children of Philip6 Frazer and Mary (--?--) all born at Kilmactranny Parish, Sligo, Ireland, were as follows:

13. Violet6 Frazer (Richard5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born in 1803. She married James Frazer, son of Philip Frazer, on 23 Jan 1828; by license. She died on 29 Feb 1864 at Derrycastle Rough, Roscommon, Ireland. She was buried on 29 Jan 1864 at Ardcarne, Roscommon, Ireland; Residence listed as Aughnafingan; age at death: 61.

She lived in 1828 at Aghrafinigan, Roscommon, Ireland.

Children of Violet6 Frazer and James Frazer were as follows:

14. John6 Frazer (Archibald5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) married Isabella Frazer.

Children of John6 Frazer and Isabella Frazer were as follows:

15. Archibald6 Frazer (Archibald5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1); of Aughnefinegan married Catherine Parker.

Children of Archibald6 Frazer and an unknown spouse were as follows:

Children of Archibald6 Frazer and Catherine Parker were as follows:

16. Alexander Stinson6 Frazer (Archibald5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1); of Shanwilly was born in 1806. He married Mary Hamilton in 1834.

Children of Alexander Stinson6 Frazer and Mary Hamilton were as follows:

  Richard Frazer and Amelia Hassard

Generation Seven

17. Richard7 Frazer (James6, Philip5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was baptized on 4 Mar 1830 at Ardcarne, Roscommon, Ireland. He was born on 21 Mar 1830 at Ireland. He was baptized on 28 Mar 1830 at Kilmactranny Church, Sligo, Ireland. He married Ellen Amelia Hassard in Dec 1853.

He immigrated circa 1847 to Ellis Island, New York.

Children of Richard7 Frazer and Ellen Amelia Hassard were as follows:

George Frazer Family of Ballindoon, Sligo

Link to Map of East Lough Arrow
East of Lough Arrow

George Frazer moved from North Roscommon to Southeastern Sligo. Ireland is divided into provinces, counties, baronies, parishes and townlands. Townlands are small divisions averaging 350 acres in area. In 1659, there were 11 Irish living in Ballindoon. The Townland of Ballindoon is where some Frazers in the late 1800's emigrated to the US. It is located in the Connaught Province, County Sligo, Barony of Tireril, Killadoon Parish. The Ballindoon Dominican Friary was built there in 1507.

Kilmactranny is 2 miles East of the southern part of Lough Arrow and is a parish but not a townland. It is the site of an old church dating to before 1236. Killadoon and Kilmactranny are neighboring parishes. Combined with the Parish Shancoe, they make up the parochial union of Geevaugh. Both Ballindoon and Kilmactranny are in the Southeastern part of the County Sligo near Lough Arrow. Lough pronounced lôkh is the Irish word for Lake.

Ballindoon is located to the top left of the Figure to the right. Kilmactranny can be seen in the same Figure about 4 miles to the Southeast of Ballindoon. Other points of interest on the map are megalithic tombs, a castle, a friary, cairns and sweat houses. The dotted line represents the Roscommon County line which is not far away.

18. George William7 Frazer (James6, Philip5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born circa 1838. He married Margaret McMaster, daughter of James McMaster Sr. and Fanny McMaster, on 15 Mar 1866 at Kilmactranny, County Sligo, Ireland. He died on 24 Jul 1928 at Ballindoon, Sligo, Ireland. He was buried on 21 Jul 1928 at Ardcarne, Roscommon, Ireland.

He was a Farmer.

  George Frazer and Family
George Frazer Family

Children of George William7 Frazer and Margaret McMaster were as follows:

George and Margaret were married by license which was a slightly more formal way to go about it. They were married by Reverend Arthur Hyde. Much is known of him as he was the father of Douglas Hyde who became the first president of Ireland. James Frazer and his son George lived through the Potato Famine of 1845-1850. According to family tradition, they slaughtered their young calves and livestock and shared with the neighbors during the famine.

The picture above right shows the Frazer family. The children appear to be the 6 youngest of the 9: Richard, Violet, Hubert, Susan David and Edward (b. 1890).

Here are the results from the 1901 Census:
Name Surname Relation to head of Family Religious Profession Education Age Sex Occupation Marriage Where Born
George Frazer Head of Family The Church of Ireland Read + Write 64 M Farmer Married Co. Sligo
Margaret Frazer Wife " " 42 F   Married "
David Frazer Son " " 16 M Farmer's Son Not Married "
Susan Frazer Daughter " " 14 F Farmer's Daughter " "
John E. Frazer Son " " 12 M Farmer's Son " "

Margaret lived in Cuilnagleragh in the Union of Kilmactranny at the time of her marriage. Griffith's Valuation lists a James McMaster as owning land in Cloghmine (near Kilmactranny). James, Jr. and James Sr. are listed as owning land at Cuilnagleragh. There was a Fanny McMaster present at the time of her first son's birth.

Margaret is buried at the Church of Ardcarne Cemetery. The stone reads:

IN LOVING MEMORY
MARGARET FRAZER
DIED FEB 14TH 1922
AGED 74 YEARS

ISABELLA FRAZER
AGED 80 YEARS

ERECTED BY HER
HUSBAND GEORGE FRAZER
BALLINDOON
AGED 85 YEARS

The stone is unusual in that it doesn't give a death date for Isabella nor George. It would also seem unusual to have a living age on a gravestone. Also the age of George disagrees with his death certificate of 99 years in 1928.

19. Richard Paton7 Frazer (Archibald6, Archibald5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born circa 1843 at Ireland. He married Jane Frazer, daughter of Archibald Frazer and Winifred Conlon, on 14 Dec 1863 at Church of Ireland, Ardcarne, Roscommon, Ireland.

Children of Richard Paton7 Frazer and Jane Frazer were as follows:

20. Anne Jane7 Frazer (Archibald6, Archibald5, Archibald4, Archibald3, Edward2, Robert1) was born on 13 Dec 1828. She was baptized on 17 Dec 1828 at Kilmactranny Church, Sligo, Ireland. She married James McMaster Junior, son of Abraham McMaster and Margery (--?--), on 21 Feb 1856 at Church of Ireland, Ardcarne, Roscommon, Ireland.

Children of Archibald7 Frazer and Fanney Little were as follows:

Archibald lived in Shanvoley. The map of where he lived is shown above. His grandaughter was Mabel Curtis. She did much research into the Frazers around the 1930's. It is likely that the traditions she investigated were related to Archibald and his relatives living in the area. One of those relatives living nearby was James, my third great grandfather.

  James A. Frazer with Fish
James A. Frazer visiting in Rochester, MA

Children of James Archibald8 Frazer and Margaret Clark were as follows:

There were no children of James Archibald8 Frazer and Maud Alice Rayne.

James emigrated from Ireland and saved money to bring several of his brothers to the Boston area. He arrived in Boston at age 20 on the Pavania, a 3489 ton vessel. He changed from a rural farmer and adapted well to the life of a city businessman. He first worked at a coffee and tea company as a clerk and salesman.

Later, he established his own coffee and tea company (Frazer and Co.). Later still, he had a real estate business. According to a letter of Violet McMaster Marston, he was Church Treasurer for several years at the Church of the Ascension in Roxbury. When he visited his daughter in Rochester, he would fish at Snow's Pond, possibly remembering his days in Ballindoon on Lough Arrow. I recall a picture of him on my grandmother's bureau where he is holding the fish he has just caught.
